For many applications, the spatial distribution of the pyroelectric coefficient is of interest. One way to determine the depth profile is the thermal wave or Laser Intensity Modulation Method (LIMM). Here, the opaque surface of the sample is heated with an intensity modulated laser beam.
The idea behind LIMM is that we can create an oscillating temperature inside the sample, with a depth-dependent amplitude. See an example on the following page!
